What is Pilates?

Pilates is named after the late Joseph Pilates (1880-1967). As a sickly child, Joseph was determined to improve his health and developed a series of exercises. These emphasised the importance of posture, flexibility and spinal strength & control.

Modified Pilates

This is based on Joseph's early work; traditional exercises have been adapted in line with current research around muscle function to ensure safe and effective exercises. Modified Pilates focuses on training the deep abdominal and pelvic floor muscles to improve core strength, flexibility and coordination. It can be beneficial in the enhancing the rehabilitation and prevention of back pain as well as helping many other musculoskeletal problems.

Pilates is becoming increasingly popular and its benefits are being recognised in the medical world. Taught correctly, Pilates is suitable for all levels of fitness and ability.
